This is one of my favourite indulgences, courtesy of my Mum. This is a sweet sauce to pour over cupcakes or a vanilla cake or anything that you want to drastically increase the sugar taste of! Whenever I make the “Yellow Cake” recipe from Better Home and Gardens, I make this sauce to go with it. It’s quick, fragrant and sinfully delicious!

Quick Vanilla Sauce

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings 6 people
A sugary sweet sauce for your cake or cupcake! Yum!


  • Small saucepan


  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3 T flour
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 T butter or margarine
  • 2 T vanilla


  • Add sugar, flour and salt to small sauce pan
  • Add 2 cups boiling water to mixture, stir and bring to a boi
  • Cook, stirring frequently, until sauce becomes thick
  • Once the sauce has thickened, remove from heat and add butter/margarine and vanilla
  • Serve hot over cake or cupcakes
